Michael Cox

Principal flute BBC Symphony and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

One of the most acclaimed flutists in the UK, Michael Cox began his musical training at the College of Music in Zimbabwe, continuing to the Royal College of Music in London.

His career in the orchestra began as second flute at the BBC Symphony Orchestra and then as principal flute at the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the Britten Sinfonia.

In the chamber music repertoire, Cox collaborated with renowned British ensembles and artists such as James Galwayand Murray Perahia. He was a member of the ensembles “Haffner” and “Albion”, the London Symphony Chamber Players and the London Sinfonietta.

Michael Cox played as principal flute in all types of ensembles -  symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, contemporary music ensembles, among which are the Academy of St. Martin’s in the Fields and London Sinfonietta. Because of his special interest in contemporary music, he has collaborated with composers such as Messiaen, Takemitsu, Dutilleux, Berio, Boulez, Tippett, Birtwistle, Stockhausen, Henze, Adams, Carter, Penderecki, Lutoslawski.

Dedicated not only to the stage, but also to training the young generation of musicians, Michael Cox is Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
