Alexandru Tomescu

Born in Bucharest in 1976, Alexandru Tomescu debuted in 1985 at the age of 9 and since then he has played hundreds of concerts and recitals and 26 countries. He studied with Ştefan Gheorghiu in Bucharest, Tibor Varga in Switzerland and Eduard Schmiederin  the USA.

He won the 1st Prize at the George Enescu International Competition in Bucharest in 1999, the 2nd Prize at the Jacques Thibaud - Marguerite Long International Competition in Paris in 1999 and the 2nd Prize at the Paganini International Competition in 1995.

His interpretations of the major solo violin repertoire in such concert halls as the Theatre des Champs Elysees, Carnegie Hall, or the Metropolitan Arts Center in Tokyo, as well as his recordings, have elicited enthusiastic praise from the critics and the public alike.

AlexandruTomescu has collaborated with such conductors as Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur and Christoph Eschenbach. Passionate about chamber music, he founded in 2003, together with Horia Mihail and Razvan Suma, the Romanian Piano Trio which has toured extensively in Romania and abroad.

His recent recording of the complete 24 Caprices by Paganini was received with unanimous praise.

Alexandru Tomescu is also a truly modern artist, most aware of the social and cultural impact of classical music .He champions several social projects and has performed many concerts for new audiences with the goal of bringing classical music to a large public.  His ever increasing personal popularity is a testimony to his artistic success.

Since 2007, AlexandruTomescu has been playing the 1702 Elder-Voicu Stradivarius, on loan from the Romanian government.
